AlcoholEdu for College relies on evidence-based prevention methods, learner-centered pedagogy, up-to-date science-based content, and a carefully customized user experience to inspire students to reflect on and consider changing their drinking. In this ninth version of the program, our team of curriculum and technology experts has designed a program that's both effective and entertaining.
|
Surveys and knowledge tests. The course collects data on students' alcohol-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors at three points in time during the AlcoholEdu for College experience. All attitude and behavior data is completely confidential.
Science-based content. Course content, developed using the latest research about alcohol's effects on the mind and body, is disseminated in five modules. A 30- to 45-day "intersession" between modules 4 and 5 allows students time to integrate strategies with their own experiences involving alcohol before completing the final module.
Multi-pronged personalization. Multidimensional pathways ensure maximum engagement for each student - both males and females, committed and situational non-drinkers, high-risk drinkers, and problematic drinkers. For instance, the course provides support for decisions made by non-drinkers, while taking frequent, high-risk drinkers through a brief motivational intervention.
Multi-media format. The course presents content in entertaining formats devised to boost engagement, communicating in ways that make sense to today's millennial students. These formats include blogs, comics, animation, instant messenger chats, and YouTube-like videos. Click here to watch video clips from the new course and hear what students are saying.
Real-life scenarios. The course is designed to motivate behavior change by modeling positive behaviors, providing specific strategies, and building self-efficacy. Students also set their own

goals by developing their own Personal Plan. Through this process, students select highly personalized strategies to ensure that they are more likely to use them and to encourage ownership.
Evidence-based prevention strategies. The course incorporates evidence-based prevention strategies, including personalized feedback, motivational interviewing, expectancy theory, and normative feedback - strategies recommended by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).

"This is the premier alcohol education program available in the United States at the moment. It is recognized by many other institutions as the most effective, and it is respected by our colleagues. This type of program helps give students a better idea as to what is real and should change their expectations, and therefore change their behavior." - Art Hartzog, Dean of Students, Spartanburg Methodist College
"That was the best course I think I've ever taken! I wish some of my high school classes were that fun/educational. I passed and I'm really surprised at how much the school never taught us! Thanks for having me take it, it really opened my eyes!!!!" – Student at the University of South Florida
