AlcoholEdu® for College was developed to serve as the cornerstone of a comprehensive, Population-Level Prevention® program - one that engages your entire first-year class in a shared prevention experience. Outside The Classroom encourages our customers to take full advantage of this opportunity with your students by using AlcoholEdu for College as the framework around which you put other campus programs, policies, and resources that reflect the unique culture of your campus.
Colleges, universities, and Greek organizations that support students' full completion of AlcoholEdu for College are most likely to see true cultural change. Students are most engaged after completing Survey 2 and prior to completing Survey 3. During this window of time, students have increased curiosity and report the highest levels of readiness for change.
That curiosity and readiness provides the perfect opportunity to encourage students to discuss what they are learning, compare their real life experiences to what they have learned, share impressions, and listen to others about their experiences with AlcoholEdu for College. Administrators can support these opportunities by:
- Making RAs, faculty who teach first-year courses, and peer educators aware of the AlcoholEdu Facilitator's Guide (available to customers on the AlcoholEdu Administrative Site Tools & Resources page)
- Developing bulletin boards that display information relevant to alcohol policies and laws, development of refusal skills, healthy ways to manage stress, and/or other concepts that are covered in AlcoholEdu for College
- Incorporating alcohol risk-reduction messages into current student activities and other student affairs programming
- Engaging students in one-on-one or group conversations about what they are learning about alcohol and college
- Using posters, bulletin boards, and flyers to congratulate students on completing AlcoholEdu for College
We encourage our customers to tap peers, campus leaders, staff, and faculty to continue engaging students throughout and after the AlcoholEdu experience, ensuring your prevention efforts are maximized. Making alcohol prevention a regular part of your interactions with students demonstrates that you care about students before they experience problems with or related to alcohol - and results in true community.
