Pearl River, NY - October 16, 2001 - Zeta Psi Fraternity of North America Inc. announced today that it has adopted AlcoholEduTM, an online science-based alcohol education course designed specifically for college students, for use this fall with its international membership. Zeta Psi is a leader in alcohol awareness issues and education for its members and is the first Greek organization in North America to adopt an online alcohol education program.
“Over the years, Zeta Psi has been proactive in addressing the issue of alcohol abuse. We are constantly seeking new, innovative and promising approaches as we learn how to socialize responsibly in the ever-changing atmosphere of campus life. AlcoholEdu empowers students to make the kinds of educated decisions that translate into successful collegiate experiences and we are extremely enthusiastic about its potential impact on our organization,” said Richard Breesewine, Executive Director of Zeta Psi.
The Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drugs (HEC) and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) have endorsed this broad-based approach to alcohol education as an effective measure for curbing high-risk drinking.
“Zeta Psi’s preventative approach to addressing student alcohol problems sets them apart as true leaders in the Greek community,” said Brandon Busteed, Founder and CEO of Outside The Classroom, Inc., a Newton, Massachusetts-based education company. “AlcoholEdu is simply the most effective way to reach students. We are very excited to be working with Zeta Psi to promote safe and healthy campus environments.”
AlcoholEdu engages students with streaming audio and video presentations, synchronized with diagrams, charts, quiz questions, interactive exercises, and case studies. Zeta Psi will be collecting longitudinal data generated from AlcoholEdu’s built-in assessment tools to help them measure students’ alcohol-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.
Breeswine noted that the decision to adopt the program is an outgrowth of the organization’s long-standing risk management practices. Zeta Psi does not in any way condone physical or psychological hazing, or sexual, alcohol or substance abuse. The fraternity subscribes to the Statement of Basic Expectations developed by the North American Interfraternity Conference and communicates its position on these matters frequently to its undergraduate and alumni members through risk management seminars, its Leadership Training Institute and its magazine The Circle of Zeta Psi.
