Villanova Adopts AlcoholEduTM for All First-Year Students

Villanova, PA - September 6, 2001 - Villanova University announced today that they have adopted AlcoholEduTM, an online science-based alcohol education course designed specifically for college students, for use this fall with their entire first-year class. Villanova is the first university in the nation to require all freshmen to complete AlcoholEduTM. Although the university does employ other alcohol initiatives, this is the first time they will require all 1650 incoming students to complete an alcohol course.

“Over the years, Villanova University has been proactive in addressing the issue of alcohol in a comprehensive manner to include education, intervention, prevention and enforcement efforts so that our students may thrive in their academic pursuits. We are constantly seeking new, innovative and promising approaches, and we are very excited about making AlcoholEdu available to our entire freshmen class. We hope that AlcoholEdu’s preventative alcohol education program will start students off on the right track by empowering them to make responsible decisions that translate into successful collegiate experiences. This program is well aligned with Villanova’s commitment to developing the total person: intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, culturally, socially and physically and we are very enthusiastic about its impact on our student body as a whole,” said Paul Pugh, Dean of Students.

The Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drugs (HEC) and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) have endorsed this broad-based approach to alcohol education as an effective measure for curbing high-risk drinking.

“Villanova’s preventative approach to addressing campus alcohol problems sets them apart as true leaders in academia,” said Brandon Busteed, Founder and CEO of Outside The Classroom, Inc., a Newton-based education company. “AlcoholEdu is simply the most effective way to reach students as they transition into university life. We are very excited to be working with Villanova in our joint mission to promote safe and healthy campus environments.”

AlcoholEdu engages students with streaming audio and video presentations, synchronized with diagrams, charts, quiz questions, interactive exercises, and case studies. Villanova will be collecting longitudinal data generated from AlcoholEdu’s built-in assessment tools to help them measure students’ alcohol-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.
