May 13, 2002 – BOSTON – Outside The Classroom, Inc., the leading provider of online prevention programs for colleges and universities, today announced a strategic alliance with the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) to disseminate TheHealthSurveyTM to NASPA’s 1,200-member institutions as a way of providing critical institution-specific and normative data related to comprehensive student health issues.
TheHealthSurvey is the first and only comprehensive, web-based survey and assessment tool that provides statistically accurate insight into the health-related attitudes and behaviors of college students. Subjects covered include alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco, sex, violence, eating disorders, and suicide. TheHealthSurvey offers unmatched ease of management and depth of research, providing actionable information to school administrators.
NASPA, a leading voice for student affairs administration, policy and practice, represents 8,500 student affairs professionals, including deans and vice presidents in top colleges and universities. A major focus of NASPA is to identify best-of-breed resources for student affairs professionals to use in their campus work. By endorsing and encouraging member adoption of TheHealthSurvey, NASPA seeks to bring student health issues to the highest levels of priority and governance in higher education.
In the wake of recent reports by the American Medical Association and National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism classifying alcohol abuse as symptomatic of a pervasive “culture of drinking” on college campuses, TheHealthSurvey offers key campus decision makers the invaluable information they need to develop and assess the environmental effectiveness of campus-specific prevention programs.
By endorsing TheHealthSurvey, NASPA has established three goals for their constituency:
- Collect best-of-breed national data on student health issues.
- Provide school-specific data of uncompromising integrity to guide individual campus prevention efforts.
- Develop regional and demographic comparison data.
By approaching prevention issues from the highest levels of student and academic affairs, NASPA and Outside The Classroom are leading the way in creating a comprehensive, environmental, fact-based approach to alcohol, drug, and other prevention programs that will help reduce the negative consequences of high-risk behaviors among college students.
“This type of information about student health rarely finds its way to the university population outside of student health offices, “ said Brandon Busteed, Founder and CEO of Outside The Classroom. “It especially needs to be in the hands of top level administrators and trustees, and NASPA, by encouraging this data collection to be spearheaded by vice presidents and deans, is well-poised to make that happen.”
“There are few campus issues more compelling than the wide range of high-risk behaviors that affect students’ overall health. NASPA’s commitment to the TheHealthSurvey reflects a desire by our members to create healthier campus communities,” said Kevin Kruger, Associate Executive Director of NASPA. “We strongly believe the data generated by TheHealthSurvey will be a critical resource to campus administrators.”
Outside The Classroom’s flagship product, AlcoholEduTM, is a three-hour, non-opinionated, science-based alcohol education course, designed for college students. Together, AlcoholEdu and TheHealthSurvey represent the cornerstone upon which a school may build, monitor, assess and constantly improve the effectiveness of alcohol and other prevention efforts.
