Outside The Classroom and NASPA Announce Partnership

WASHINGTON, DC - April 18, 2001 - Gwendolyn Jordan Dungy, Executive Director of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), and Brandon Busteed, CEO and founder of Outside The Classroom announce the formation of a two-year partnership to provide online health and life skills solutions to student affairs professionals and the students they serve in colleges and universities. Initially the partnership will focus on Outside The Classroom's AlcoholEdu online course designed to teach students about alcohol and its effects on the body. Through this partnership, NASPA members will receive up to a $1,000 discount when enrolling their full freshmen class in the AlcoholEdu course.

NASPA, the leading voice for student affairs administration, policy and practice, represents 8,500 student affairs professionals, including many deans and vice presidents in leading colleges and universities. In addition to providing continuing professional development for our members, a major function of NASPA is to identify cutting-edge resources for student affairs professionals to use in their campus work. "Our partnership with Outside the Classroom will enable NASPA to offer new ideas in the broad area of health education and to provide innovative solutions to the problem of alcohol abuse on campus." Said Dungy.

Outside The Classroom, the foremost provider of online life skills education, developed AlcoholEdu, the nation's first online alcohol course to offer affordable, proven-effective, science-based alcohol education to the more than 12 million students on American college campuses, over 10 million of whom are estimated to have chosen to drink and/or use drugs last year. This progressive approach to educating college students about alcohol and the dangers associated with high-risk or "binge" drinking was developed in answer to the increasingly urgent demands of both college students and administrators throughout the country. Presidents and boards of trustees are adopting AlcoholEdu on college campuses to provide accountability and reduce liability with a potential to receive monetary credit from health insurers.

"I am so excited about this partnership because NASPA is all about results, and so are we. The incredible response to AlcoholEdu from students, administrators, faculty, and health care professionals has validated our efforts to educate students about alcohol. We are pleased to join forces with NASPA in our combined commitment to promote the welfare of students nationwide," said Brandon Busteed.

The NASPA/Outside The Classroom partnership will focus on addressing the critical health education needs on campus, using cutting-edge technologies. Shannon Elllis, president of NASPA, in announcing this partnership to the NASPA membership at its recent annual meeting in Seattle stated, "Our compatible missions and innovative goals support the advancement of the learning and living experiences for our students with different approaches to old problems and emerging issues. The blend of technological innovations, a deep knowledge of students and a commitment to dealing with the issues ensures a successful partnership...(and) confirms NASPA's strong commitment to enhancing the well-being of students across the country through high quality health promotion and education programs."

Outside The Classroom has also agreed to provide NASPA with access to aggregated data from TheHealthSurvey, an online assessment tool that provides institutions with a detailed look at campus culture and health trends. "This survey provides a full picture of the positive and negative health attitudes, behaviors, and perceptions that our students currently hold--it's invaluable information for every institution of higher education," said John Pryor, a pioneer in surveying students on the web and a researcher at Dartmouth College who specializes in college student health behaviors. Outside The Classroom will create a data pool from survey results to help schools to develop and prioritize policy and programming initiatives that link with specific health data.

"Schools gain invaluable insight into their student body and are able to effect important change on campus through the online resources Outside The Classroom has made available to NASPA members. I am confident that as schools begin to utilize AlcoholEdu and TheHealthSurvey they will wonder how they previously got along without these capabilities," said Brandon Busteed.
