A Public Health Approach to College Student Drinking and Related Consequences

Dr. Toben Nelson of the Harvard School of Public Health will share a theoretical framework and measurement approach for understanding drinking and related harms among college students. He will present data from the Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study, a multi-year nationally representative epidemiologic study of students attending US colleges which highlight the influence of environmental and contextual factors on student drinking and he will discuss implications for policy and community-based intervention.

About Toben Nelson
Toben F. Nelson, M.S., Sc.D. is a social epidemiologist whose research focuses on how social factors and policy shape health and health behaviors during developmental transitions from youth into adulthood. Dr. Nelson is a Research Associate at the Harvard Prevention Research Center, Project Director for the YMCA-Harvard After School Evaluation on Nutrition and Physical Activity, and is Assistant Director of Program Evaluation for the College Alcohol Study at Harvard School of Public Health College. He holds a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and doctoral degree in Public Health from Harvard University.

Dr. Nelson has published research in journals such as American Journal of Public Health, Journal of Adolescent Health, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Pediatrics, and the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. He has appeared on CNN Headline News and New England Cable News, and his work has been featured in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, USA Today, ESPN.com, Sports Illustrated magazine, Walking magazine, Longevity magazine, the American Psychological Association Monitor, Money magazine, Parents magazine, and Research to Reality: Newsletter of the Harvard Center for Children's Health. He lives in Newton, Massachusetts with his wife, Heather, and sons, Avery and Tomas.
