Education about binge drinking a good step

May 30, 2007

In an effort to curb students' binge drinking, Indiana University has decided to require incoming freshmen to complete an online alcohol education program.

The measure is a much-needed step toward providing freshmen with information about the realities of binge drinking, defined as five drinks in a sitting for men and four for women. Other campuses who have adopted the "AlcoholEdu" program report a reduction in the "college effect" that often results in problematic drinking habits.

One of the most welcome components of the college experience can also be the most risky for young adults: freedom. Independence provides opportunities for both good and poor judgments; the university recognizes that knowledge can be the foundation that tips the balance between the two.

While students may think they are knowledgeable about alcohol and its effects, they average a "D" grade on the introductory confidential survey. Students are often surprised at their own lack of knowledge about key factors such as blood alcohol content and the effect of alcohol on the ability to consent to sexual activity. Better education can lead to fewer tragedies in the form of academic failure, vehicle accidents, unwanted sexual activity, violence and even death from alcohol poisoning.

IU is to be commended for identifying grant and gift sources that will provide the $40,000 per year necessary for the operation of the program. While treatment is also an important component of student alcohol management, prevention is just as necessary.
