A University of Mississippi student received the 2006-07 Excellence in Student Leadership Award.
J.C. Fleming III was recognized for his alcohol prevention and education efforts at the school.
The award is sponsored by Outside the Classroom, developers of the AlcoholEdu for College, an online-based alcohol and education prevention program, the university said in a release.
After learning students in his residents hall had been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, Fleming, now a senior business major from Minden, La., founded CHEERS, Creatively Helping to Establish an Educated and Responsible Society, his freshman year. The group works to increase the number of designated drivers by having restaurants and businesses provide free, non-alcoholic beverages to designated drivers.
"It is a great honor to receive the Excellence in Student Leadership Award," Fleming said in a university press release. "It makes you feel very special for all the hard work the CHEERS team and I have put in to make this program available for the community. I believe this could help gain even more support of community leaders for the CHEERS program, which in turn can make it grow even more."
The Ole Miss group is a chapter of an organization that was founded in Missouri in 1986. In 2006, the Ole Miss chapter received a $5,000 grant from the Mississippi Department of Public Safety. Fleming was also honored for his involvement.
