William Paterson University's prevention expert honored for
outstanding contribution to the field
SEATTLE, WA - March 10, 2009 - Glen L. Sherman, PhD, Associate Vice President and Dean of Student Development at William Paterson University, was honored yesterday with the Outstanding AOD Professional Award at the annual Prevention Excellence Reception, held at Seattle's Space Needle. Sponsored by Outside The Classroom, the Outstanding AOD Professional Award recognizes the exceptional performance of a professional staff member, faculty member, or administrator who demonstrates continued commitment to the field of alcohol and other drug prevention in the college, university, or organizational setting.
For the past six years, Dr. Sherman has spearheaded William Paterson University's alcohol prevention and intervention efforts. Recognized both regionally and nationally as an expert in the field, Dr. Sherman has implemented a comprehensive set of programs, including requiring the online alcohol prevention program AlcoholEdu for all first-year students and creating a Peer Health Advocates group. Recognizing that a comprehensive approach involves more than educational programs and early intervention, Dr. Sherman has developed and sustained supportive services for students already struggling with alcohol and other drug addiction. In addition, Dr. Sherman applied and received several grants, allowing him to fund substance-free housing options on campus.
"On behalf of Outside The Classroom, I want to congratulate Glen Sherman for his outstanding leadership in the field," said Brandon Busteed, Founder and CEO of Outside The Classroom. "His dedication to this issue has helped William Paterson University and the surrounding community become less defined by alcohol, resulting in a steady reduction in alcohol-related incidents on campus. He has positively impacted student life through his visionary and innovative approach to alcohol prevention."
The Outstanding AOD Professional Award is part of the Prevention Excellence Award program sponsored by Outside The Classroom, Inc., founder of The Alcohol Prevention Coalition and developers of the AlcoholEdu suite of online prevention programs. The Prevention Excellence Awards honors individuals, institutions, and Greek organizations that have achieved excellence in their alcohol prevention efforts, thus significantly improving the quality of student life.
