Achieving Breakthrough Progress in Alcohol Prevention: A New Framework
Date: Thursday, February 17, 2011, 1:00 – 2:00pm Eastern
view a recording
The field of college alcohol prevention has benefitted from paradigms such as the 3-in-1 Framework, the Environmental Management Model, the NIAAA findings, and other useful guidelines. What has been missing is a framework that views the problem in the context of the broader system and considers the relationships between its subsystems. Applying the principles of Systems Thinking to alcohol prevention, Outside The Classroom has developed a groundbreaking new approach that will allow campuses to achieve true breakthrough progress in alcohol prevention. This presentation will:
- Highlight the six key components of a Systems Approach to alcohol prevention.
- Describe a new methodology for determining “what works” -- which programs, policies and strategies are most effective.
-
Unveil the Campus Diagnostic (www.campusdiagnostic.com), a groundbreaking new tool to help you evaluate your campus’s alcohol prevention programming and the degree to which prevention is a priority at your institution. (Participants will be asked to complete the Campus Diagnostic (five-minute survey) prior to the webinar and will be immediately be given feedback.)

This presentation will share how College Alc was built on the premise that (1) alcohol use can cause harm; (2) harms can be prevented; and (3) college students can play a role in mitigating those potential harms. Dr. Wyrick will also explain how the course contains pre- and post-surveys (as well as an optional follow –up survey) and four interactive lessons. download pdf on College Alc
Using Alcohol-Free Options to Promote a Healthy Campus Environment
Date: Thursday, December 9, 2010, 1:00 - 2:00pm Eastern
Hosted by Brandon Busteed, Founder & CEO, Outside The Classroom

Today’s economic reality dictates that alcohol prevention professionals closely examine the impact of their programming. While many campuses provide alcohol-free options to deter students from high-risk drinking, practitioners appear divided on the efficacy of this approach. This presentation aims to strengthen campus efforts by disseminating best practices for designing alcohol-free activities and will:
College Student Use of Alcohol and Energy Drinks: Findings from a National Survey
Date: Friday, November 12, 2010, 1-2pm Eastern
view a recording
National headlines have recently highlighted the problem of combined alcohol and energy drinks following several hospitalizations and incidents associated with these products. On Friday, November 12 at 1 pm Eastern, Outside The Classroom is hosting a free webinar on the topic of combined alcohol and energy drinks. The webinar will share new research findings from a recent analysis of data from more than 1,000 randomly sampled college students regarding levels of alcohol and energy drink use and its associated negative consequences. This data set also examines students’ expectancies of and reasons for using combined alcohol and energy drinks, and their perceptions of others’ use of these products. read our resources on this issue
The Alcohol Prevention Compass:
Setting the Standard for Programmatic Decision Making
Date: Wednesday, November 3, 2010, 3:00 - 4:00pm Eastern
Hosted by Brandon Busteed, Founder & CEO, Outside The Classroom
As economic realities strain alcohol prevention budgets, the ability of practitioners to assess the validity and quality of efficacy research findings becomes increasingly important. But how should practitioners interpret findings from widely varying research studies that sometimes appear at odds? This webinar will help prevention professionals make well-informed programming and policy decisions. The presentation will also:
- Illustrate the important differences in quality of research studies. When a research article is published that conflicts earlier findings regarding the efficacy of the same program, how might that be interpreted?
- Unveil a new cost-impact matrix for analyzing and assessing research results on the efficacy of an array of alcohol programs and policies.
- Examine several programs and policies on the cost-impact matrix, from social norms marketing, to 21st birthday cards, to parental notification.
State of the Union of Alcohol Prevention:
Why the 2002 NIAAA Report is Obsolete as the Current Guide to Alcohol Prevention
Date: Tuesday, October 12, 2010, 3:00 – 4:00pm Eastern
Hosted: by Brandon Busteed, Founder & CEO, Outside The Classroom

A research article published in the October 2010 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research shows that only a small percentage of colleges and universities have acted on the NIAAA recommendations from 2002. What’s more, the NIAAA research was conducted almost a decade ago, and more than 700 studies have since been published on “college and alcohol.” Clearly the field of prevention is in need of a new roadmap for enacting real change. To address this issue, this presentation will:
- Uncover the latest critical data, themes, trends, and issues related to college drinking.
- Describe a new methodology for determining “what works” -- which programs, policies and strategies to put in place.
- Discuss national trends in student abstention from alcohol and how to harness the power of the “silent majority.”
- Outline a framework for making breakthrough progress in alcohol prevention —one that addresses not just the what, but the how.

Institutionalizing Alcohol Prevention and Maximizing
Alcohol Prevention Investments
Date: Tuesday, May 4, 2010, 2:00-3:30pm Eastern
This web conference is open to institutions wishing to learn more about The Alcohol Prevention Coalition and its research. Interested in a recording? Please contact us.
Institutionalizing Alcohol Prevention: Despite the great strides made to elevate the importance of alcohol prevention in higher education, few campuses have truly made prevention an institutional priority. Yet without a campus-wide commitment, efforts to address high-risk drinking often fail. This study explores the linkages between high-risk drinking and other institutional priorities (retention, student engagement, academic success) highlighting tools for quantifying the financial impact of high-risk drinking on campus, along with cost savings opportunities for improvements.
Maximizing Alcohol Prevention Investments: Deciding where to spend prevention resources is a universal challenge for student affairs leaders, and one that has become increasingly critical in today’s financial environment. Last year, the Alcohol Prevention Coalition unveiled our unprecedented methodology for measuring the relative cost and impact of 22 common alcohol prevention strategies, including factors to consider for optimal implementation and opportunities for cost savings. This presentation highlights our major findings, along with additional tools developed to support our Coalition partners.
Understanding the College Effect:
Updated National Data, Insights, and Trends

Every fall, college administrators see a significant change for the worse in first-year students' alcohol consumption immediately after they arrive on campus. This phenomenon, known as the "College Effect," can have a strong negative impact on the college experience, impairing academic performance and lowering retention rates.
This presentation reviews recent findings on the nature and scope of the College Effect, based on analyses of data collected in 2008 as part of the AlcoholEdu for College course for first-year students, and then outline a set of program and policy ideas for mitigating the problem.
Breakthrough AlcoholEdu Efficacy Results:
A Summary of Recent Studies from Around the Country
Date: Tuesday, March 17, 2009
Hosted by: Brandon Busteed, Founder and CEO, Outside The Classroom
William DeJong, PhD, Executive Director for Research and Analysis, Outside The Classroom
Contact us to receive a recording.
To assess the efficacy of Outside The Classroom's online alcohol education course, randomized control trials were conducted with first-year college students at individual institutions. This presentation reviews two recent investigations that compare the results of pre- and post-intervention knowledge tests and behavioral surveys for randomly assigned control groups and AlcoholEdu experimental groups. Preliminary findings suggest that AlcoholEdu had a significant impact on reducing problematic drinking behavior, reducing overall drinking over time, and reducing poor decision-making related to alcohol use. In addition to our findings, we discuss specific strengths and weaknesses regarding the research design and analysis methodology, plus alternative approaches to pursue in future research.
