Providing Alcohol-Free Options to Support a Healthy Campus Environment: Does This Approach Work, and If So, How?
Monday, Oct 18, 1:45 - 3:15pm in Chesapeake 10&12
Today’s economic reality dictates that alcohol prevention professionals closely examine the impact of their programming. Yet, practitioners are divided regarding the effectiveness of alcohol-free activities to curb high-risk alcohol use among college students. This presentation presents research findings, lessons learned, and best practices from the practitioner knowledge base to engender a common understanding of what alcohol-free options can accomplish within a comprehensive alcohol prevention approach. A presentation of effective alcohol-free programming at North Dakota State University, along with cases from other institutions, highlights lessons learned and best practices. Ample time will be provided for participant discussion and lessons learned.
Presented by Jane Marie Vangsness, Director, North Dakota Higher Education Consortium for Substance Abuse Prevention – North Dakota University System, and Helen Stubbs, Director, Partner Education, Outside The Classroom
Engaging Presidents and Trustees in Prevention:
Moving from "Prevention-Speak" to "President Speak"
Tuesday, October 19 at 9:30 - 11:00am in Chesapeake D&E
Between 1979 and 2009 the percentage of campuses with a designated AOD position jumped from 14% to 75%, demonstrating alcohol prevention has become a priority in higher education. Or has it? Despite the dramatic rise in dedicated AOD roles, it remains a struggle to get AOD prevention work on the agendas of our senior-most leaders. Without presidents and trustees providing strong leadership, our ultimate success is greatly impaired. Learn how to shift from ‘prevention-speak’ to ‘president-speak,’ connect research on drinking to key institutional priorities such as academic performance and retention, and understand your role in motivating presidents and trustees.
Presented by Brandon Busteed, Founder and CEO, Outside The Classroom
